Apr 19, 2016 11:13PM ● By Shannon Antinori

A 9-year-old girl died after a crash involving an ATV Tuesday night, and a 53-year-old man was hospitalized with severe injuries, Plainfield Police said.

The Plainfield police and fire departments responded to the crash at 6:55 p.m. on Ridge Road between 135th Street and Plainfield Road.

Officers who arrived on the scene found the ATV just off the roadway in the grass west of Ridge Road and south of a rock-lined culvert, according to Sgt. Mike Fisher.

Fisher said a 53-year-old man was conscious and breathing at the scene, along with a severely injured 9-year-old girl, who was not breathing and was receiving CPR. Officers continued CPR until paramedics arrived on the scene, police said.

The girl was transported to Loyola University Medical Center via a Life Star helicopter, but later died of her injuries, Fisher said.

The man was transported via ambulance to Rush-Copley Hospital in Aurora.

Fisher said a preliminary investigation indicates that the ATV was traveling south on the asphalt path along Ridge Road, then continued south through the grass before entering the culvert, where it lost control and crashed.

As of 11 p.m., Ridge Road remained closed between 135th Street and Plainfield Road while the Plainfield Police Department Reconstruction Unit investigated the incident.
