School District 308 is proud to announce two new $500 scholarship opportunities for Oswego and Oswego East high school seniors who are also graduates of a District 308 junior high school and Long Beach Elementary School.
Jennifer Pergler, a third grade teacher who has taught at Long Beach Elementary for the past 22 years, recently helped to establish the Long Beach Lion Scholarship. She said Long Beach teachers and staff helped raise the funds for the scholarship.
“I have been blessed to work with the amazing children at Long Beach, and at the end of the last school year, I realized there were no scholarships offered to Long Beach students,” Pergler said. “The staff at Long Beach welcomed the idea for a new scholarship, and we subsequently raised $500. Our generous Home and School Association then matched our $500.”
Applicants must have at least a 2.6 cumulative GPA and be in good standing at their high school. They must also have received a letter of acceptance to a two-year or four-year college or university, or a vocational school of their choice.
To apply for the scholarship, applicants must answer two of four essay questions in 500-700 words or less. The essay questions are:
  • Pick an experience from your own life and explain how it has influenced your development.
  • Who has had the biggest influence in your life and why?
  • Describe how you have demonstrated leadership ability in your school or community.
  • Describe a special attribute or accomplishment that sets you apart from others.
Interested District 308 high school seniors can get the application form and instructions on how to compete for the Long Beach Lion Scholarship at your career center, or pick one up at Long Beach Elementary. The application can also be downloaded here.
