A week after the unexpected death of an Oswego student, family members have launched a fundraiser to help with burial expenses.
Known to friends as DJ, Donja Williams, 13, died Nov. 24 from complications after suffering an asthma attack.
Kayla Williams, Donja’s sister, said the family is hoping to raise $3,000 to cover the costs of his burial. On Tuesday, she launched a GoFundMe page to collect donations.
Donja, a student at Traughber Junior High, was born to Terence Williams and Jameka Jordan on July 10, 2002.
He is survived by his parents, five sister and four brothers, according to Kayla Williams.
“He was just a really great kid,” she said. “He loved to dance, and wherever he went, he was always dancing.”
Donja fought a lifelong battle with asthma, but didn’t let that stop him from pursuing another one of his passions — skateboarding.
“He told me he was going to go pro in skateboarding,” Kayla said.
Donja grew up in Aurora and moved to Oswego about a year and a half ago, according to his sister. His family is touched by the outpouring of support from the community, she said.
The teen’s family is working to cope with their loss while struggling to pay funeral and burial costs.
“It’s stressful, but we’re managing to get through it,” Kayla said.
Visitation is scheduled for 10 a.m. Wednesday at Main Baptist Church, 814 E. Galena Boulevard in Aurora, followed by funeral services at 11 a.m. Burial will follow at River Hills Memorial Park, 1650 River St. in Batavia.
