On Saturday Sept. 19, the Oswego riverfront is going to be both delicious and beautiful. The Oswegoland Park District will host the fourth annual Brew at the Bridge, craft beer event at Hudson Crossing Park, 65 N. Harrison St. Events celebrating the craft of beer will be held throughout the weekend.
Friday, September 18 will kick off with the world premiere of Mortimer Media’s documentary, Brewmance at Oswego Village Hall, 100 Parker’s Mill. Director Shannon Mortimer explores the journey of turning passion into commerce in the craft brewing industry.
Running just under an hour, Brewmance is a story about the people behind the brews - their story and passion for making beer. It documents the five months leading up to the grand opening of Motor Row Brewing in Chicago. The film also highlights Four Fathers Brewing in Valparaiso, Indiana. See what it takes to open a brewery, the challenges behind it and the payoff when the doors are finally open. The viewing of Brewmance is free to the public and begins at 7pm.
Saturday will bring 24 brewing companies to the banks of the Fox River with the Brew at the Bridge tasting event from 1-7pm. Brewing Companies were invited based on the buzz they have in the area, interesting seasonal varieties, and award winning brews.
The season is in full swing with many brewing companies featuring Oktoberfest beers. Recipes with pumpkin are prominent in Travelers Jack-O Shandy, Sam Adams Fat Jack Double Pumpkin Ale, and Lakefront’s Pumpkin Lager. Oswego’s own Fox Valley Winery will share their Bad Apple Hard Cider and Coney Island Brewing Company will have their Hard Root Beer on hand.
Brew at the Bridge continues to keep the true highlight on the craft of beer developed in this area with an exciting line up of brewers. With brewing companies in Chicago, Plainfield, Westmont, Lemont, Algonquin, Geneva, and Genoa, guests of Brew at the Bridge will get a taste of how Chicago leads the country in innovative craft beer. Brewers will be on hand to discuss what went into their delicious developments. A full list of the brewing companies follows.
There is a tradition at Brew at the Bridge to award one brewing company the coveted People’s Choice award. This is determined in collaboration with the Oswegoland Park and Recreation Foundation. Once guests judge their top beer of the afternoon, they can vote by placing a dollar in the brewing companies jar at the Foundation booth.
The brewing company whose fans raise the most money for the Foundation wins the distinction of People’s Choice. The Oswegoland Park and Recreation Foundation is a public entity supporting the mission and goals of the Oswegoland Park District ensuring that future generations continues to cherish the valuable natural resources of our area.
Developing interesting craft beers is cutting edge at the Home Brew Club level. Brew at the Bridge will spotlight four clubs in the Chicagoland area who are pushing the envelope with their crafty creation.
Basement Brew Crew of Oswego, Plainfield Area Lager Enthusiasts (PALE), Spent Grain Society of Plainfield, and Wingnut Brew Club of St. Charles will be on site to discuss their experimenting. While their limited supplies last, guests purchasing a package will receive three complimentary Home Brew taste tickets.
Pairing the right meal to your beer will be easy with selected culinary artisans at Brew at the Bridge. Food options include Dark Horse BBQ, Wurst Kitchen sausages, and the Chi-Taco food truck.
Tap House Grill will have burgers and their famous beef and Gouda sandwich. Pages Popcorn will have their popcorn which was recently featured on The Food Network. Kiwanis Club of Oswego will have pretzel necklaces along with Kuiper’s cider doughnuts and apple cider.
Hudson Crossing Park will be filled with both beer enthusiasts and music all afternoon. Tony Pape will kick off the event on the Brew Stage at 1pm. Cirrus Falcon perfectly plays the songs everyone wants to hear at 3pm. At 5pm, Logical Fleadh will play modern Irish and Scottish Fiddle Songs.
The Oswegoland Park District is looking for volunteers who might work with the brewing companies at Brew at the Bridge. All volunteers receive the 2015 Brew at the Bridge t-shirt. For information on volunteering, contact Kristie Vest at (630) 554-4425 or email email@example.com.
During the event, guests can use the Oswego Junior Women’s Club Glass Washing Station. The club will also host Prost competitions to see who can hold their stein the longest.
