Oswego is one step closer to securing a large grant to help fund a proposed dog park.

The Oswegoland Parks and Recreation Foundation announced via its Facebook Monday that Fido Field is one of 15 finalists from 700 towns in the PetSafe Bark for Your Park Grant contest that will award $100,000 to the winner and $25,000 each to four runners-up.

According to the contest page, Oswego is listed as 11 out of 15 finalist communities. Voting for the final stage began Wednesday, June 17 and runs through July 22.

"The Foundation and Park District staff are ecstatic that Oswego is included in the final round," said Chad Feldatto,  senior park planner with the Oswegoland Park District. "We knew that we should be in good shape for the next round if we had enough votes to be in the top 15."

In addition to about 3,000 online votes, Feldatto said Fido Field's appearance in the finals also was due to letters of community support written by State Rep. Stephanie Kifowit, Oswego Village President Gail Johnson, Montgomery Village President Matt Brolley, and Oswego Chamber President Angie Hibben.

With the start of PrarieFest set for Thursday, Feldatto said the Park District and Park and Rec Foundation plans a big voting push on festival grounds. He said Foundation members will be stationed at the Park District booth asking for votes. Signs also will be set up at the Pop Up Dog Park set up in Prairie Point Park from Friday to Sunday.
"We really want to have a strong start and look to PrairieFest as a great place to kick off the voting drive," Feldatto said. "Tens of thousands of potential voters coming to PrairieFest for the weekend is something that the Foundation wants to capitalize on."

In the weeks following PrarieFest, Feldatto said the Foundation
will contact community groups, organizations, dog professionals, and veterinarians to help spread the word and get out the vote.
