Date Changed for Oswego 2015 Fireworks Display

EDITOR'S NOTE: This story has been updated to reflect the process by which the date change was made.

For the first time in memory, Oswego will not host its July 4 fireworks on the actual holiday.

Village Trustees approved a $10,000 fireworks expenditure Tuesday night that will have the show taking place on Friday, July 3, instead. The change was recommended by the village's Community Relations Department, and trustees approved the change with a unanimous vote of the $10,000 payment.

Upon questioning from Trustee Karin McCarthy-Lange over the change, Community Relations Manager Michele Brown said the new date was picked due to the holiday falling on a Saturday this year.

"Because the Fourth is on a Saturday, I thought it would be a nice way for us to kick off that holiday weekend by doing the fireworks on the Third," Brown said. "We tend to have a lot people that go to parties and go out of town, so they would still be able to attend their hometown festivities on Friday night."

Brown said the date change for this year isn't necessarily permanent.  The village will determine future years on a "case-by-case basis," depending on the day of the week of the holiday.

As in year's past, the fireworks will begin at about 9:30 p.m., and will be launched from Prairie Point Park. The rain date will be Saturday, July 4.
