The Kendall County Sheriff's Office is warning residents of another recent Internal Revenue Service scam.
Deputies became aware of an attempt to gain a resident's personal information via a telephone call from California in which the caller stated the IRS was attempting to contact them about a lawsuit. The resident also was instructed to call back to a New York telephone number. The resident did not return the call, the sheriff's office said.
The Sheriff's Office warns that if you receive correspondence requesting personal information, ensure that you verify the sender. If you receive a suspicious telephone call or email, file an online report through the Federal Trade Commission at https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov. Citizens may also contact Oswego Police or the Sheriff's Office for help.
Residents are also reminded to monitor their personal information. By law, the three credit reporting agencies, Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion are required once a year to provide a free copy of your credit report. Your credit report can be accessed at www.annualcreditreport.com.
