The Traughber Junior High School seventh grade Lady Panthers put an exclamation point on their remarkable season by defeating the Plank Pirates 60-55 to win the conference championship tournament on Tuesday, March 3.

Unlike the last few games, the Panthers got off to a fast start and led 17-6 after one quarter and then 31-17 at the half. However, the Pirates would not succumb to the Panthers and cut their lead to 37-28 at the end of the third quarter. In the final minutes the Pirates were within just a few possessions but again the Panthers demonstrated their customary poise and composure and prevailed by a final score of 50-45.

Natalie Johnson saved her best offensive game of the year for her last game and scored 24 points. Angelina Schlinger and Daniele Dorilio added 10 points each with Julia Henrikson, Hayley Dillow, and Jada Embry also chipping in. Due to an injury she suffered in the previous game, Summer Hawkins was unavailable but made important contributions throughout the season.

The Panthers not only finished the season with the conference championship, but they also maintained a perfect 22-0 conference record, winning every A and B game they played. Overall, they posted a 26-1 record. The Panthers’ only loss of the season came in early February to Yorkville Middle School in the opening round of the Kaneland Tournament.

However, the girls rebounded quickly. The following day, the Lady Panthers defeated Thompson Middle School from St. Charles, Hampshire, Rotolo, and finally Geneva. The win over Geneva earned them the Silver Division Championship. Danielle Dorilio, Julia Henrikson and Natalie Johnson were named to the All-Conference team.
