Oswego Joins DuPage Coalition to Market Former Dominick's Site

The village of Oswego has joined a coalition of six DuPage County communities working to fill vacant Dominick’s grocery store buildings.

Like Oswego, economic development officials from Wheaton, Woodridge, Naperville, Glen Ellyn, Bensenville and Bartlett have been working for over a year to find suitable replacements for vacant Dominick’s locations that closed in 2013. 

However, the work poses a difficult marketing challenge for officials because Dominick’s parent company Safeway continues to make lease payments on the empty buildings and building owners have shown no desire to spend millions of dollars to subdivide the stores to make them more marketable. The lease on the Oswego Dominick's location doesn't expire until 2022.

The group is centralizing marketing information about the stores in an effort to make them more attractive to large-scale retailers. The cost to the village to join the group will be minimal, said Vijay Gadde, Oswego economic development director. 

“The regional marketing approach presents an opportunity to showcase to retailers looking for multiple locations to reach out to millions of new customers with all the marketing information readily available,” Gadde said.

About 30 of the 72 Dominick’s locations that closed in 2013 remain vacant. In Oswego, Village Administrator Steve Jones said the village has had extensive talks with several specialty grocery stores to locate in the former Oswego Dominick’s.

“We’ve talked to Mariano’s, Caputos, The Fresh Market and others,” he said. “There will be interest in Oswego, it’s just not today.”
