Illinois Auxiliary of Wives Behind the Badge has organized an online T-shirt fundraising drive to support the family of Oswego's Douglas Balder — the Illinois State Trooper injured in a Tollway accident Jan. 27.

The crash killed Tollway worker Vincent Petrella, 39, and left Balder with third-degree burns and many broken bones. Renato V. Velasquez, 46, of Hanover Park was charged with several felony counts in the crash.

Balder and Petrella had stopped to help a truck driver before Velasquez allegedly drove his own semi into Balder's trooper vehicle, pushing it into Balder and Petrella.

Balder was welcomed home last summer from a tour of duty in Africa. He is a Senior Chief in the U.S. Navy Reserves.

The T-shirt drive also is being conducted in conjunction with Trooper Nathan Shanks, who was injured in a car accident earlier this month in southern Illinois.

T-shirts are $20 each and can be ordered in sizes S-4XL.
